Minnie Deacon Obituary

Minnie (Jacobs) Deacon

On June 14th, 2024, Minnie (Jacobs) Deacon, age 94, passed away peacefully at her home in Carnegie with family members by her side.  She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Afifi (Joseph) Jacobs.  Minnie was also preceded in death by her husband Alexander (2001), siblings Mitchell, Abe, Virginia,  Roseanne, Moe, and a one year old daughter, Alexis.  She is survived by children Ronald, Rachelle (Bill), Marianne (Steve) Alexander (Paula), grandchildren Alexis (Travis), April (Tyler), Abby, Stephen (Amy), Mitchell, Evan (Claire), great grandchildren Callen and Carson and many other nieces and nephews.

She was known to all friends and family as “Situ”.

As a young girl:

Minnie was a huge fan of boxing, her family couldn’t afford a radio, so she would go to the neighbor’s house to listen to the Joe Lewis matches.  She was raised in the New Kensington’s Protestant church and frequently attended since she had a strong sense of faith.

In marble tournaments, she was unbeatable by anyone in the neighborhood.  She was active in fundraising efforts for charitable causes and belonged to the Girls Scouts and Salvation Army.  This included singing in groups on the corner, participating in parades, and selling cookies.  Anything to support the impoverished and destitute, as she was one of them herself.

Minnie excelled at shorthand and typing in high school.  Her teacher urged her to find a job, but her domestic obligations at home prevented this; as she was a responsible, resourceful and unselfish child.

On December 5th, 1948, she married Alexander Deacon at St. George Antiochian Church in Bridgeville, converting to the Orthodox religion and becoming an active church member.  Both her sons were altar boys, which made her extremely proud.  Anyone who met Minnie recognized her as a sincere Christian with a strong faith, always providing food, shelter, a kind word and a warm heart to anyone she knew for years or only for a minute.  She was an amazing cook, especially when it came to Middle Eastern cuisine like grape leaves, kibbeh, tabbouleh, sleek, rice, and more.

Minnie truly enjoyed spending time with her family, whether it was a summer BBQ, seeing her grandchildren compete in swim meets, attending band festivals, sunny days at the beach, Deep Creek Lake vacations, or simply sitting on the back patio with a cup of coffee and nice discussions with loved ones. Her home was a gathering spot for many occasions filled with wonderful memories.

Friends and relatives will be received at Bagnato Funeral Home in Carnegie (412-276-3964) on Thursday, June 20th from 5-8 pm.  Trisagion Service on Thursday at 7 pm. and funeral service on Friday 11 am. at Bagnato’s.
